In a dire humanitarian crisis in Mosul, Iraq, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is stepping up to provide life-saving care to malnourished infants. In March 2017, MSF treated over 300 babies under the age of 6 months in Qayyara. These infants were brought to the MSF-supported ITFC by families who had fled the besieged parts of West Mosul.
Due to the trauma and living conditions in Mosul, many mothers are unable to breastfeed, and formula milk is scarce. In some cases, mothers have resorted to feeding their babies black tea or sugary water instead of milk. These infants have not only suffered from malnutrition but also from other illnesses, further exacerbating their vulnerability. With limited access to healthcare in Mosul, MSF is providing a lifeline to these malnourished babies and their families.
